Did You Know?
Hundreds of years ago, the Aztecs, who were the original people of Mexico, were looking for a place to build their capital. Legend has it that Huitzilopochtli, god of the sun and war, told them to build it where they could see an eagle on top of a cactus, grasping a snake. The Aztec capital grew into Mexico City, and the eagle, snake, and cactus sit in the center of Mexico’s flag.

Mexico Flag Colors Meaning

The national flag of Mexico is a tricolor flag, and it has three main colors, greenwhite, and red, with the coat of arms in the center of the white band. The coat of arms depicts an eagle killing a snake while perched on a cactus.

This is based on an Aztec legend that the gods told them to build a city, Tenochtitlan, where an eagle killed a snake on a cactus. Bellow the eagle and the snake is an olive branch, representing peace. There is also a ribbon attached to it, which is in the colors of Mexico.

  • Green: It represents Independence and Hope.
  • White: It represents the purity of Mexico’s faith and the Unity of all Mexican.
  • Red: It symbolizes the blood of Mexican heroes that died during the Independence War.
